Education and Jiu-Jitsu: A Lesson Beyond the Mats
Featuring Professor Lucas Sakae’s visit to Brazil and the inspiring connection between martial arts and learning.
When we talk about Jiu-Jitsu, we often think of discipline, technique, and perseverance. But the art extends far beyond self-defense — it becomes a powerful tool for personal growth, confidence, and education.
During his recent visit to Brazil, our black belt coach Lucas Sakae embodied this philosophy in a way that deeply inspired everyone who witnessed it. He visited Projeto Vassoural, a social project dedicated to offering free Jiu-Jitsu and English lessons to children in need. What made this visit even more special was his decision to teach the class in both Portuguese and English, blending martial arts and education into one powerful experience.
For the children, this wasn’t just another Jiu-Jitsu class — it was a window to the world. By mixing the two languages, Lucas showed them that education can open doors as much as dedication on the mats can. He reminded them that studying and training go hand in hand, both requiring consistency, patience, and heart.
“It was more than a class,” one of the local coaches shared. “It was an inspiring message about how far Jiu-Jitsu and knowledge can take you.”
This moment perfectly represents what we stand for at GARRA BJJ Academy — a commitment to shaping stronger individuals, not just stronger athletes. The values of discipline, respect, and continuous learning that we teach on the mats are the same principles that drive success in school, work, and life.
Professor Lucas’s visit reminded us that teaching Jiu-Jitsu is also teaching life lessons. Every bow, every roll, and every challenge overcome helps develop resilience and character. And when combined with the pursuit of education, it creates a foundation for lifelong success.
We’re proud to see one of our own representing the academy abroad and spreading the true essence of BJJ — connection, humility, and growth.
Thank you, Professor Lucas, for your example and for showing that the language of Jiu-Jitsu — much like education — is universal. 🌍🥋
