Belt System

Practictioners of  BJJ receive different colour belts depending on their skill level and age (Stripes are used to denote levels between belts):

Belt Summary

During the course of membership at the Garra Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academy, students will receive the following belts through successful grading:

  1. White – the first belt given to beginners;
  2. If under 16 years of age – Yellow, Orange and Green;
  3. Blue belt;
  4. Purple belt;
  5. Brown belt;
  6. Black belt.

Requirements Blue Belt

Students must:

  1. Demonstrate technical skill, fitness and competency during in training sessions.
  2. Evidence application of all basic movements including attacks, defences.
  3. Perform immobilizations and self defence moves.
  4. Apply components such as posture, balance and leverage.
  5. Obtain sound knowledge of the style.

Requirements Purple Belt

Students must:

  1. Evidence all blue belt requirements (as detailed above).
  2. Assist in instructing and supervising classes (under guidance for the purpose of attaining further knowledge).
  3. Apply and display full dedication and knowledge in classes.
  4. Demonstrate versatility, good positioning and timing.
  5. Obtain higher knowledge about BJJ (self defence, socialization, education and MMA).

Requirements brown belt

Students must:

  1. Evidence all blue and purple belt requirements (as detailed above).
  2. Assist the Master (Master’s right hand).
  3. Set a suitable example for all other students to follow.

Requirements Black Belt

Students must:

  1. Evidence all blue, purple, brown belt requirements (as detailed above).
  2. Reach Master status and is referred to as a Master or professor. Suitably accredited to award belts to students.

Stripes

Whilst a student at the Garra Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy, students will also receive numerous stripes, between belts upon successful grading. Stripes indicate levels. There are 4 levels to each belt. Students will receive these stripes from white to brown belts. Once a student has been awarded a black belt level, further stripes can still be achieved through merit and
life long commitment to the martial arts. Once all further stripes have been achieved, the Master will receive a red belt. This is the highest level that a Master can achieve. Achieving stripes in BJJ is very significant, as it is a step closer for students to gain more knowledge and understanding about the system. It is also a motivational factor for the students to train and dedicate themselves even harder.
